What makes it special to me

Why I love Riquewihr at Christmas

For me, the best part of Riquewihr at Christmas is the town itself. The half-timbered houses, decorated shopfronts and little courtyards make the walk just as enjoyable as the market stalls. I filmed here in 2023 and came back in 2025 to explore more of the shops, cellars and streets I had missed.

My advice is to look beyond the main street. It was packed by midday, but a street or two away I found quiet lanes—and upstairs in the Dolder, I had the museum to myself. Take your time, look through the open courtyard entrances, and leave room for a few discoveries along the way.

Explore Riquewihr on foot

Take a walk through Riquewihr’s Christmas streets

Choose one of the 13 stops on the map, read my tips and use Next stop to continue. At the Dolder, you can also look around the square and out of the tower window in 360°.

2 hours to a half-day · Daily, 27 November–20 December 2026 · Start and finish at the town hall

This suggested route draws on my visits in 2023 and 2025. Shops and courtyards have their own hours, and seasonal stalls can change. The two optional walks are controlled inside the map and are not included in the main route’s distance.

Riquewihr Christmas market essentials

2026 · Open every day

27 November–20 December

Riquewihr’s market opens during the week as well as at weekends, giving you more flexibility when planning your Alsace visit.

Free admission to the Christmas market

Monday–Friday
10am–6:30pm
Saturday & Sunday
10am–7pm
Opening Friday, 27 November
10am–8pm

My timing tip: I arrived around 8:45am on my Sunday visit in 2025 and filmed a quiet morning walk before the shops opened. Come early if you want that quieter look at the houses; come later if browsing open stalls is your priority. Leave time after dusk for the lights if your return transport allows it.

Plan the wider trip

Where Riquewihr fits in your trip

Riquewihr is a useful stop between Colmar, Kaysersberg and Ribeauvillé. I’d give it a proper morning or afternoon rather than trying to fit every village into one day.

Coming from Colmar?

The Christmas Shuttle runs Friday–Sunday. For other days, check regular bus 816 and your return journey before setting out.

Shuttles & parking ↓

Find the start

Head to the Hôtel de Ville arch at the lower end of Rue du Général de Gaulle. The route returns to the same place.

Directions to the start ↗

Cobblestones, hills & steps

The main street rises uphill. The Dolder museum, some cellars and the optional wall route involve steps. Courtyard entrances vary; the full route is not a verified step-free walk.

Use Useful stops on the walking map to find the toilets on Rue de la Première Armée. There was a long queue when I passed in 2025. For a sit-down break, I found indoor seating at the back of La Cour Gourmande.

My drone view of Riquewihr’s compact old town and surrounding vineyards in December 2025

A small town, with plenty to look into

My drone view shows how compact the historic centre is. On foot, though, the shops, courtyards and museum can easily fill a few hours. The optional hill viewpoint is a separate walk; this photograph was taken from the air.

Use the regional map to see how Riquewihr fits with the other Alsace market towns.

A little more about the town

Riquewihr questions & answers

Is the Christmas market open during the week?

Yes. The 2026 market runs daily from 27 November to 20 December. The Colmar Christmas Shuttles run Friday–Sunday, so check regular transport if you visit on another day.

Official market dates ↗
How long should I allow?

I’d allow two hours to half a day. You can walk up the main street and back fairly quickly, but that misses much of what I enjoyed: looking into the courtyards, browsing shops and spending time in the Dolder museum. Add longer for a meal or the optional walks.

Does the route return to the start?

Yes. Start at the town hall arch, explore uphill to the Dolder and Upper Gate, then return through town to the Christmas market beside the town hall. The optional wall and hill walks are shown separately on the map.

Is the Dolder museum worth going inside?

I enjoyed it. In 2025 I had the upstairs rooms to myself, and the window view was a highlight. The museum tells the story of the fortified town and its watchman. Access involves steep stairs, and it has its own admission charge and opening hours.

Dolder Museum visitor information ↗
What about the Thieves’ Tower?

I saw it from outside and wish I had gone in. The museum includes the old prison and a winegrower’s house. Its torture chamber and punishment displays may not suit every family. Check opening times before making a special trip.

Where can I take a break from the crowds?

Try the side streets rather than staying on Rue du Général de Gaulle the whole time. I found much quieter lanes just off the main street. La Cour Gourmande had indoor seating at the back when I visited in 2025, which is worth checking if you want to sit down with something to eat.

What are the little witches in the shops?

A leaflet I picked up at La Légende des Sorcières tells the story of Marie Wolf: after losing her fiancé, her cries supposedly frightened away enemies attacking the town. The little witches are associated with that local legend. It is a story to look out for in the shops, rather than a documented account of the town’s defence.

My Christmas visits to Riquewihr

I filmed daytime and evening walks in 2023, then returned on 14 December 2025 for a short morning walk, a daytime walk, a 360° walk and an evening walk. I arrived around 8:45am, filmed the quiet streets before opening and went back through town as the lights came on. I also flew my drone, returning the next morning for clearer weather before heading to Colmar. The photos and tips in this guide come from those visits.
