What makes it special to me

Why I would spend an afternoon and evening here

I filmed Basel in the snow in 2022 and came back with my friend Bobby in 2025. We filmed here before continuing to the Alsace markets. The two main markets are close enough to enjoy together, with the cathedral, the Town Hall courtyard and views over the Rhine giving you plenty to see between the stalls.

In 2025 I started my evening walk before sunset and returned to Münsterplatz after dark. That is how I would plan a visit too—leave time for the town in daylight, then come back for the lights. You do not need to rush straight from one market to the next.

Explore Basel on foot

Take a walk through Basel’s Christmas markets

Start at Barfüsserplatz, head up to Münsterplatz, then visit the Rathaus and Rhine before returning to Cathedral Hill. The numbered stops follow my suggested route; my evening films visit them in a different order.

More Christmas stops, if you have time

New for 2026 · Basler Wienachtsdorf at Theaterplatz

The new village around Theaterplatz and Elisabethenkirche runs November 26–January 3, 2027. It is near the southern end of the visit, with crafts, food and covered seating. It is not in my 2025 footage or the main mapped itinerary.

Adväntsgass im Glaibasel · Rheingasse

Across the Rhine, this food-focused market runs November 26–December 23. It opens at 5pm on weekdays and 2pm at weekends, with closing times varying by day. Consider it as a separate evening extension.

Claraplatz & the Magical Courtyards

My map includes an optional route to Claraplatz and its seasonal Alpine cabin. In the old town, also look for the decorated Magical Courtyards. I filmed one on Münsterberg in 2025. Check the current courtyard list and access times.

A few things I would know before going

Plan your visit

Check the price first

I bought a grilled meat skewer in 2025 without checking the price. It was CHF 19.50. Have a look at the menu before ordering, especially if you plan to eat your way around the stalls. Prices from my visit are examples, not a 2026 menu.

Make room for a food stop

I love chimney cakes, and watching them being made is part of the fun. I bought one during my day walk and stopped to watch the stand again in the evening. Around the markets, look for raclette, grilled sausages, Läckerli biscuits and hot drinks. We never stopped for dinner in 2025 and ended up making scrambled eggs back at our apartment. I would leave a proper food break in your plan.

Dress for your actual visit

My 2022 evening was snowy and about −6°C. In 2025 it was around 10°C. The same walk can feel very different from one year to the next. Check the forecast, wear shoes with grip and allow for slopes, cobbles and crowded market lanes.

Visitors sitting by the fire at Basel’s Fairy Tale Forest

Leave a little time to linger

People were gathered around the fire even on my mild 2025 visit. The Fairy Tale Forest is more than a quick photo stop if you have children with you. I saw workshops and the little train, but did not stay to watch a full blacksmithing session.

Toilets, steps and visiting the Minster

I have marked the public WC beside Münsterplatz under Useful stops on the map. The walk climbs Cathedral Hill and includes a cloister passage, so it is not a verified step-free route. You can stay outside if the passage is closed. Visiting the Minster interior or climbing a tower needs extra time and a check of visitor hours.

Getting to the start

Trains, trams & parking

By train

The blue line on my map shows the walking approach from Basel SBB. You can also take a tram towards Barfüsserplatz. Check the destination on your train, not just the platform—I accidentally ended up in Paris on my way to Basel in 2022.

By car

Bobby and I used Parkhaus Elisabethen in 2025. Its address is Steinentorberg 5, 4051 Basel. Walk into the centre from there. Check current charges, vehicle restrictions and space availability before setting out.

Follow the Swiss exit for bus 50 to Basel SBB, then continue by tram or on foot. Check the current connection for your arrival time.

My Basel walking tours

My 2025 evening walk follows the change from late afternoon to darkness. Compare it with my snowy 2022 visit below. Put on your headphones for the sounds of the streets and markets.

My 2025 evening walk is scheduled for November 7. If it is not available yet, check back on release day. I also filmed a 2025 daytime walk and will add it here when it is ready.

A little more about the town

Basel questions & answers

How much time should I allow?

I would give Basel an afternoon and evening. That leaves time for both main markets, something to eat, the Rathaus courtyard and a look over the Rhine. Stay long enough to see Münsterplatz after dark. Add more time for museums, the Minster interior or the optional walks.

Where should I start the walk?

My suggested route begins at Barfüsserplatz, convenient for trams and the walk from Basel SBB. Both of my evening films begin at Münsterplatz instead. You can join the suggested route there if that suits your arrival better. The route finishes at Münsterplatz, so allow extra time to return to your station or parking garage.

Are there Christmas markets after December 23?

The two main markets on Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz end on December 23, 2026. The new Christmas village at Theaterplatz is scheduled to continue until January 3, 2027. Check its programme for holiday hours before travelling.

Basel Christmas Village ↗
Is this a step-free route?

This is not a verified step-free itinerary. Cathedral Hill and Rheinsprung involve slopes, and the cloister passage and Rathaus gallery may involve steps. The ferry steps below the Pfalz are not needed for the main walk. You can leave out the interior passages and gallery, but check a suitable accessible route for your own needs.

Can I use euros at the markets?

Switzerland uses Swiss francs (CHF). A fudge seller accepted my euro coins in 2022, but that was an individual kindness, not something I would rely on. Check payment options and prices before ordering, and have a way to pay in francs.

Is Basel a good market to visit with children?

The Märchenwald on Münsterplatz is worth allowing time for. In 2025 I saw a little train, candle dipping, blacksmithing and bread baked over a fire. Check the current programme, age requirements and prices for activities rather than assuming everything is included.

Official Christmas programme ↗
Does the BaselCard cover a stay in France?

No. The BaselCard is for eligible overnight guests in the canton of Basel-Stadt. I stayed in France in 2025, so that arrangement is different. Eligible guests receive local public transport benefits, but the card does not cover travel into France.
